What does a downpipe do?

More Power

Upgrading your downpipe removes the restriction that exists immediately after your turbo.  Subaru WRX, STI, and other turbo models need room to "breathe" if more power is desired.  This is one of the first things that needs to be addressed.  It will remove excess backpressure and allow the engine to scavenge exhaust gases easier, causing more efficiency and giving you more power.

Better Turbo Spool Characteristics

Turbos take a small amount of time to create the desired level of boost pressure.  Part of what makes the turbo spool slower is too much back pressure in the exhaust system.  Removing this will help your turbo react quicker to the input you give it through pressing the gas pedal.  Faster spool means better lap times and more power that you can truly feel on the road.

Supports Future Modifications

Although it is extremely effective just by itself, it's the gift that keeps giving once you add more parts and pursue higher power, if that's what you are after.  Having a free flowing downpipe is critical if you plan on other modifications like intercooler, E85 fueling, or a bigger turbo.
